About Donnybrook

Music is not just a learned art or an acquired skill -- it is an intense means of expression which emanates from deep within one's soul in a quest that may have begun centuries ago in the hearts of ancestors who passed on the gift of song. The purpose of feeling, interpreting and performing music is to bring enlightenment, poignancy and joy to the performer and the listener. For the veteran musicians who comprise Donnybrook, the fervent desire to honor, respect and share that gift and tradition -- to musically nurture new and old friendships -- is the definitive cornerstone of life itself.

Donnybrook is an acoustic power band that makes a mountain of sound trimmed with rivers of laughter. Church halls, clubs, concert halls and auditoriums ring with great music from Ireland, Scotland, America and other meaningful places. Donnybrook’s shows are spiced with good feeling and a warmth that takes folks back to a simpler, better time. No computers, no synthesizers, no smoke or mirrors—just solid, innovative, riveting music played on acoustic instruments by reverent music lovers of blue-collar heritage. And they are out-and-out fun! Even riotous at times...

These 4 minstrels are students of many different types of music, but 90 percent of their songs and tunes are rooted in the ever-influential and far-reaching Celtic music genre. They may break out in selections of rock-n-roll, country and western, bluegrass, and mountain music – truly that is in keeping with “bringin’ it all back home,” as the Irish say. Donnybrook’s repertoire is deeply rooted in the music their ancestors brought from the Emerald Isle and Scotland. Go see every band you can -- you won’t forget Donnybrook.

Members of Donnybrook

Kevin Quinn -- This jolly wee guitarist/singer/writer has brought his special brand of folk music and banter to audiences in 11 states, Ireland and Scotland over the past 20 years. His innate need to sing and laugh strikes responsive chords in listeners from ages 8 to 98. He’s got that aging folkie look, but the fire within is still young. Meanings, messages, feelings, tempo -- with heavy dashes of band synergy, energy and camaraderie thrown in – are tools with which he brings happiness to the multitudes. He proudly runs a clean show, and has 7 albums to his credit. He is the most decorated editor/writer/photojournalist in the Dept.of Defense with 80 awards in worldwide competition. His 23-year career with the Army Corps of Engineers is a source of pride, but his heart is with his music about people, friends, home, travels to other lands and seeing the world through the eyes of love and laughter.

Steve Groves -- Anyone who works with Steve knows this - his calling card is stamped with one word - Professionalism. First off, he sings lead and harmony vocals with equal skill and beauty. He wields a unique, big ol' orange Gretsch bass guitar, symbolizing a big ol' metronome that has been known to keep an entire room in perfect rhythm for four solid hours. Aside from his innate, clock-like rhythmic precision, this man is renowned throughout the Midwest as a top sound-and lighting engineer. He efficiently thumps and even jumps during some songs, and the Celtic sound has worked its way into his bloodstream. But he can sing country & western, bluegrass, rock and even the blues at the drop of a hat. He is harmony, camaraderie, rhythm professionalism, skill and energy. And his true concern for what the audience hears is a gift to all.

Terry Keefe -- This prolific maestro has performed music for 25+ years with a number of musical ensembles. The Lincoln, Neb. native plays a variety of musical styles and is truly one of the busiest musicians in the Midwest. He plays bluegrass, blues, country blues, Celtic music, swing, and Cajun music with a variety of groups, including Donnybrook, The Toasted Ponies, Dr. John Walker, The Turfmen and Paddywhack. The talented minstrel won the Midwest Fiddle Championship and the Iowa State mandolin championship in 1982. He has appeared often on NETV documentaries and his band Blue River Revue also won the national bluegrass band championship. As a member of Paddywhack, he was the recipient of three KZUM Radio Member’s Choice Awards for Best of World Music. He also records with a variety of artists, and his fiddlin’, pickin’ and vocal harmony gives Donnybrook that special touch.
